I honestly was never a wine drinker. Then why, do you ask, am I writing about wine? Because wine tasting with friends is a fabulous way to spend an afternoon in downtown Half Moon Bay! Last summer I RSVP’d to a “Sip n’ Stroll” in Half Moon Bay through a meet up group. As I said, I never really liked wine, but I thought it would be a great way to meet people. Everybody seems to like wine and bond over it. I even found a few wines that I enjoyed!
Because I was worried about driving, I roller skated three miles into town with a friend to begin our Wineday Afternoon Adventure. In Half Moon Bay there are three wine tasting rooms within walking distance of each other, all on Main Street. We started out at Barterra Winery, where they have a beautiful outdoor patio area and a super friendly staff. We spent a very long time at Barterra enjoying the wine, the gorgeous outdoor space and getting to know each other. They have an eclectic collection of wines from top vineyards located from Santa Barbara to Mendocino. We tasted (and very much enjoyed) wines we've never heard of before.
After spending most of our afternoon at Barterra, we headed down to Half Moon Bay Wine & Cheese Company. Of all the wine tasting rooms in Half Moon Bay, they have the largest selection. The staff there is great and very knowledgeable. They have cheese and snacks as well as many wine accessories, so we grabbed a light snack to help keep us upright. On this particular day, we were having too much fun and didn't pay attention to the clock, so we didn't make it to our last stop, Vinoteca. The wine got the best of us this day and we needed to make it to our dinner reservation at Pasta Moon. However, we had so much fun at this event we did it again for the holidays, and we did manage to get in a trip to Vinoteca at our Holiday Sip n’ Stroll in December. We truly enjoyed it there.
Vinoteca has a great space with a super comfy couch and an amazing table for games and puzzles. They have a nice selection of wines from around the world, mostly from small family-owned wineries. The owners are really friendly and truly enjoy educating visitors about the wide variety of affordable wines they carry. They also offer a few beers from local Half Moon Bay breweries if your boo isn’t into wine.
Whether you can make it to only one of these tasting rooms or if you can stagger into all three, you’ll have a great day in Downtown Half Moon Bay, and you'll learn a lot about wine. Just bring a designated driver - the wines are too good to resist!
