9/3/2020 0 Comments A Girl and a Goat....Farm Okay, so two of my favorite things (besides art and redwood trees!) are animals and cheese. Not necessarily in that order. A great place to experience both is at Harley Farms in Pescadero, just outside of Half Moon Bay. I was invited to visit Harley Farms to see the baby goats at the beginning of this year. BABY GOATS!! Who doesn’t want to see baby goats?? Of course I said yes! And I got baby goats and more!
We arrived and found two pens full of baby goats just a few days old. There were soooo cute! There were some that were sleeping and some that were jumping,climbing and playing. We were able to pet them and take pictures. It was so hard to walk away from those cute little fuzzy wuzzies! There were also lots of mama goats still waiting to have babies- at one point we thought we'd get to see one give birth! They usually get about 150 baby goats every spring, and you can just stop by during open hours to see them. Harley Farms isn't just goats, they also have an Alpaca named Jim, a donkey named Rosie, bees, peacocks and a couple of dogs protecting the farm. Harley Farms is a working goat farm and they make several different types of goat cheeses, jelly’s, ravioli, desserts and other delicious food products. They have a store on site at the farm. I was a bit nervous, I had never had goat cheese before but I was (somewhat reluctantly) willing to try it. They offer samples of most of their cheeses, jellies and oils in their store. I tried most of the cheeses and now I am addicted to their honey lavender goat cheese! I mean, there are worse things that you could be addicted to, right? I also got their chocolate pot (a very thick, goat-milk-based pudding) and it was amazing! They have some luxurious bath and body products from soap to lotions and massage oil as well. They offer guided tours of the farm where you can see the goats being milked and visit all of the animals up close and personal. You’ll get to take home a box of farmstead cheese! The guided tours do require reservations and sell out far in advance during the summer months. You can book a private farm dinner in the Hayloft for parties of 20 or less, or join the monthly farm lunches and dinners that the farm hosts. The dates for these are posted on their web site in the October/November time-frame for the following year and they sell out almost immediately. It's no wonder they do, they have an amazing huge fir dinner table in a beautiful barn setting with handcrafted furniture and gorgeous views of the farm fields. The food is prepared by a local chef with all locally grown ingredients. If you’re looking for a fun afternoon of animals and cheese, this is the place to go! Be ready to have your heart melt and your taste buds tingle!

 One of my favorite places to go is the woods, specifically the redwoods. It’s one of the reasons I moved to Northern California in the first place. The redwoods take my breath away, they are simply majestic.
If there is one thing that could make it more beautiful, it would be to add art into the mix, and that's just what they do with the Kings Mountain Art Fair in Woodside. I had the fortunate experience to attend last year and it was an experience I'll never forget. I carpooled with my friends, which is always fun since I get to play DJ. We parked about of a half mile from the event and enjoyed the beautiful trees along the road as we walked to the venue. When we got to the event I was in awe. There were art booths set up along winding paths threaded through these giant, beautiful trees. There were oil paintings, sculptures, photographs, crafts and more. My eyes were bouncing between the beautiful forest and the amazing artwork. I really don’t know which I enjoyed more. The artists were from all over the country and amazingly talented. I wanted to buy everything, but this girl is trying to live a champagne lifestyle on a beer budget! I finally decided on a poster of a beautiful photograph from Yosemite National Park (my favorite place on earth) that had a dash of pink in it to match my apartment...and my hair! One of my friends came home with five framed prints! It really is amazing. You can’t go and not bring something home. I dare you! This art fair has been going on for over 50 years and never disappoints. It’s a wonderful way to spend a day with the family. They have a kid’s area called Kiddie Hallow where kids can make their own art. They’ve got food and drink to get you through the day. All proceeds go to support the local volunteer fire brigade and Kings Mountain Elementary School. Parking and admission are free!! I wish I could visit this year, unfortunately I'll just have to wait a year for the in-person experience. The good news is that the event isn't cancelled, like just about everything else, it's gone virtual. You can virtually walk the event and visit the artists booths, and click on a link to purchase their art. Not quite the same as being under the redwoods, but the art makes it worth attending. I'll see how far my beer budget takes me, in the meantime I'm starting a pool to see how many prints my friend ends up with this year. Care to participate? |

Then why, do you ask, am I writing about wine? Because wine tasting with friends is a fabulous way to spend an afternoon in downtown Half Moon Bay! Last summer I RSVP’d to a “Sip n’ Stroll” in Half Moon Bay through a meet up group. As I said, I never really liked wine, but I thought it would be a great way to meet people. Everybody seems to like wine and bond over it. I even found a few wines that I enjoyed!
